Abstract Details
PURPOSE:
To evaluate the efficacy of the new toric intraocular lens (IOL) Precizon (Model 565, Ophtec BV, The Netherlands), with emphasis on its rotational stability and tolerance for misalignment.
Setting:
Department of Ophthalmology - Hospital Pedro Hispano, Matosinhos, Portugal
Methods:
A prospective observational analysis of all patients submitted to Precizon toric IOL implantation between December 2013 and February 2014, with a minimum follow-up time of 6 months was performed. Uncorrected distance visual acuity (UVDA), best spectacle visual acuity (BSCVA), refraction, lens axis, endothelial cell count and complications were registered.
Results:
15 eyes with a mean refractive cylinder of 2,66 ±0,9 D were analyzed. The final mean log-mar UDVA and BCSVA significantly improved (p=0,000). UDVA was ≥ 5/10 in 93,3% of the patients and ≥ 8/10 in 86,7%. BSCVA was 10/10 in 93,3%. The mean refractive cylinder significantly improved (p=0,000), with a final mean value of 0,38±0,27D. The mean lens rotation was 3,7±2,8º, with 80% of the patients having lens rotations ≤ 5º. Relative to the target value of residual astigmatism of 0,15±0,21D, the average percentage residual astigmatism was 11% with an average residual astigmatism per degree of rotation of 2,6%. There was one intraoperative complication, namely the breaking of one haptic during the IOL injection, that forced to its explant.
Conclusions:
Precizon toric IOL is an effective and reliable option to correct preexisting astigmatism in cataract surgery. This lens not only revealed good rotational stability, but also seems to have a better tolerance to rotation than traditional toric IOL.
