Abstract Details

Purpose:

To demonstrate the advantages of a Universal Toric Lens Calculator that integrates theoretical, computational and practical surgical aspects resulting in an easy-to-use and more accurate tool for the selection of toric intraocular lenses across multiple platforms.

Setting:

Ophthalmology private practice and research center

Methods:

A toric lens calculator has been developed based on the following principles 1) To include both the sphere calculation and the required astigmatic calculation in one step. 2) To allow for input of surgical induced astigmatism and limbal relaxing incisions with arbitrary coupling to be taken into account in the same computation. 3) To increase the accuracy of the calculation and appropriate selection of a toric lens. 4) To include a “universal” database of intraocular lenses appropriately labeled including for the countries of approval, allowing the surgeon a broad selection and the best choice of a toric lens. 5) An easy-to-use browser based interface for easy “universal” access.

Results:

The calculator has been utilized to compute and select appropriate toric intraocular lenses for a period of six months, validated and compared to online calculators of five major manufacturers. A marked increase in speed and convenience of the calculation has been demonstrated and shown to be significant for surgeons and technicians alike. Further analysis shows that there is an increased accuracy as compared to results provided by some manufacturers.

Conclusions:

As the number of patients qualifying for the implantation of a toric IOL following cataract surgery rapidly increases and the availability of such IOLs by multiple manufacturers grows, it is crucial to have a practical tool built on a theoretically and experimentally sound approach. The integration of spherical IOL calculation, SIA, LRI and toric lens choice from all approved manufacturers, is a particularly useful feature of such a tool. The Universal Intraocular Lens Calculator presented here, provides such a powerful, accurate and practical solution.
