Abstract Details
Purpose:
To compare the development of regeneratory after-cataract and frequency of Nd:YAG capsulotomy after implantation of a 46YLC intraocular lens (IOL) with and without primary posterior continuous curvilinear capsulorhexis (PPCCC) 3 years after surgery.
Setting:
Department of Ophthalmology, Medical University of Vienna, Austria
Methods:
Ninety-seven patients (194 eyes) were included in this prospective randomized trial with intra-individual comparison. Cataract surgery with implantation of a hydrophobic acrylic IOL (46YLC IOL) was performed either with PPCCC in one eye or with conventional in-the-bag implantation in the contralateral eye. Eyes were examined 1 week, 1 year and 3 years after surgery. Three years postoperatively the after-cataract formation was evaluated using digital retro-illuminated images and fully automated quantification of after-cataract software (AQUA). The Nd:YAG laser rate was noted.
Results:
Three years after cataract surgery fifty-seven patients (114 eyes) could be examined. Nd:YAG treatment was performed in 59,6% (34/57) of eyes without primary posterior capsulorhexis and in 7,0% (4/57) with primary posterior capsulorhexis (p< 0.05). Results of regeneratory after-cataract will be presented.
Conclusions:
Eyes with primary posterior capsulorhexis showed a significantly lower YAG rate and a lower regeneratory after-cataract PCO score compared to eyes with standard cataract surgery 3 years after surgery.
