Purpose:
: To prospectively assess the impact of ICL implantation on change in stereoacuity.
Setting:
Dr. Rajendra Prasad Centre for Ophthalmic Sciences, All India Institute of Medical Sciences
Methods:
Patients coming to our outpatient department for refractive surgery for myopia were recruited. All patients underwent a complete ophthalmic examination before the surgery. Stereoacuity was tested pre-operatively as well as post-operatively after 4 weeks in all patients using the Randot dot test at 3 meters (range 400- 60 sec) using polarising glasses for distance, and TNO test using red green glasses for near stereoacuity. Staar Vician ICL was implanted in all eyes using the prescribed protocol.
Results:
Of the 46 patients operated, 18 were males and 28 were females. The mean UCVA in the patients was 0.049 + 0.1 decimals (range: 1-0), mean BCVA was 0.71 + 0.1 decimal units (range: 1.2-0.17) and the mean spherical error was -10.72 +4.6 decimal units (range: -1 to -19) and the mean cylindrical error was -1.12 + 1.7 decimal units (range: -6 to 0).
The median stereoacuity for near was 200 sec (mean 700.74 + 784.5 sec, range: 240-2000 sec). The median post-operative stereoacuity for near was 100 sec (mean 252.87 + 484.61; range 15-2000 sec). Stereoacuity for near changed by a mean value of 447.8 sec, (R: 0- 1940 seconds; median: 60 sec) which was significant at p<0.0001. (Wilcoxon signed rank test). Baseline stereoacuity for distance was median 2000, mean 1616.5, standard deviation 747.7 (range 45-2000). Post-operative stereoacuity was median 2000 sec, mean 1228.72 sec, standard deviation 885.1 (range 240-2000 sec). Change in distance stereo-acuity post-operatively was significant at p=0.002; (wilcoxon signed rank test). There was a weak correlation (Spearman’s rho coefficient) between improvement in near stereoacuity with increase in spherical equivalent (-0.26); whereas it was not observed with distance stereoacuity.
Conclusions:
ICL implantation may aid in improving stereo-acuity post-operatively.
