Abstract Details
Purpose:
To evaluate the effectiveness and safety of corneal collagen crosslinking (CXL) in children (below 14 years of age group) with progressive keratoconus.
Setting:
Tertiary eye care centre ,Research and Post Graduate Institute ,Bangalore ,India
Methods:
Thirty eyes of 17 paediatric patients with established progressive keratoconus were included in the study. Pre-operative and post-operative UCVA, BCVA and pentacam were done in all cases. CXL was performed as per the standard protocol advised by Seiler et al., and patients were followed up at 6, 9, 12 and 24 months.
Results:
Mean age of the patients was 10.47 years with ten males and seven females. There was improvement in the mean postoperative UCVA, BCVA and spherical equivalent. The mean K1/K2 improved from 48.42/53.77 pre-operatively to 46.49/51.70 post-operatively at the end of 2 years. Three eyes of two patients with vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) showed progression. There were no intra or post-operative complications.
Conclusions:
Corneal collagen crosslinking in paediatric patients is an effective and safe procedure to halt the progression of keratoconus. Management of VKC also forms an integral part of arresting progression of keratoconus in children in those afflicted.
