Abstract Details
Purpose:
To evaluate corneal biomechanical properties in healthy refractive surgery candidates in south Iran.
Setting:
Salouti private Eye Clinic, Shiraz, Iran.
Methods:
In this prospective case series, intraocular pressure, central corneal thickness, and biomechanical properties of 418 refractive surgery candidates were evaluated using the non-contact tonometer Corvis Scheimpflug Technology (Corvis ST, OCULUS, Wetzlar, Germany). Keratometry readings and manifest refraction were also recorded for each patient. Only right eyes were included in the analysis.
Results:
The mean (±SD) age of participants was 27±5 years and 29.9% were male. The mean spherical equivalent refraction was -3.6±1.6 D, the mean average keratometry was 43.7±1.3 D, and the mean keratometric astigmatism was 1.2±0.8 D. The mean intraocular pressure was 16.7±2.8 mmHg. The means (95% range) of corneal biomechanical factors were as follows: T1: 7.34 (6.58 to 8.09) ms, L1: 1.82 (1.39 to 2.25) mm, V1: 0.115 (0.045 to 0.140) m/s, T2: 20.1 (19.2 to 21.1) ms, L2: 1.33 (0.270 to 2.399) mm, V2: -0.671 (-0.970 to -0.372) m/s, T: 16.8 (15.6 to 18.1) ms, DA: 1.051 (0.856 to 1.246) mm, PD: 4.53 (2.48 to 6.59) mm, R: 7.24 (5.07 to 9.42) mm.
Conclusions:
Reporting the normal range of corneal biomechanical factors in refractive surgery candidates of selected ethnic groups helps in determining abnormal cases, which may be more prone to unexpected surgical outcomes.
