Abstract Details
Purpose:
To check if it same high levels for clinical results and patient satisfaction as published in the refractive community could be reproduced in our clinical setting before an eventually full scale implementation at Memira`s 47 clinic in the Nordic countries. The criteria set by Memira Clinical Advisory Board (MCAB) was followed: a new method should prove equal or better on both clincial results and patient satisfaction before a full scale implementation.
Setting:
Surgical method was SimLASIK. Lasers in use was Allegretto 400Hz and Ziemer femto laser. A clinical group of 1 optometrist and 1 surgon combined with clinic staf at our Oslo clinic was set. The surgeon had at the time 23 years of experience treating more than 40 000 eyes with exmer laser. The project was managed via MCAB. At the end of the project the clinical group was expanded to include 7 optometrists. Project lasted from Jan 2012 to Apr 2013.
Methods:
Memira`s standard preoperatively regimen was followed with addition of adjusted levels for patient expectations that matched the product. At least 1/3 of the surgeries was supervised either by the supplier of the inlay or the femtolaser. Acufocus Medical Advisory Boards recomendation on post op follow-up and drug regimen was followed.
Data anaylsis where done by both the manufacturer of the inlay and by Memira. Patients where asked twice during the follow-up to fill out MCAB`s questionare for patients satisfaction.
Results:
The clinical outcomes and patient satisfaction levels where inferior on what found after ordinary FemtoLASIK and multifocal RLE surgery. The last part of the project focused on finding eventually internal factors that could explain the results but none where found.
Conclusions:
SimLASIK using Kamra Inlay does not meet MCAB`s criteria for a new method and was not implemented in Memira.
