Abstract Details

Purpose:

Achieving good visual outcome with long term visual rehabilitation

Setting:

D D Eye Institute, Kota (R.J.) - 324009

Methods:

37 eyes of 37 children were operated in a span of 7 years in an age group of 9 months to 14 yrs. Out of 37 eyes, 23 cases had suffered a penetrating trauma. Primary repair had to be done in 14 cases. In those cases cataract extraction was done after atleast 2 weeks for the inflammation to subside. Rhexis was possible in 20 cases in which a single piece hydrophobic IOL was implanted in the bag. In rest of the cases a 3 piece hydrophobic IOL was implanted in the sulcus. In 5 cases there was pre existing PC tear in which also IOL was placed in sulcus. In all the cases posterior capsulorrhexis with anterior vitrectomy was performed. In 20% of cases wound was secured with 10-0 Nylon suture.

Results:

All eyes achieved a significant visual rehabilitation ranging from 20/200 to 20/40 (aided)

Conclusions:

Our seven year study indicates that a reasonably good outcome is possible in children with traumatic cataract by doing posterior capsulorrhexis and anterior vitrectomy for long term visual rehabilitaion
