Session Title: Cataract: Special Cases
Session Date/Time: Monday 15/09/2014 | 17:00-18:30
Paper Time: 17:06
Venue: Boulevard B

Abstract Details
Purpose:
To compare the predictability of different methods of calculating the required Toric intraocular lens power to correct pre-existing astigmatism in patients undergoing cataract surgery.
Setting:
Private practice - Perth, Western Australia
Methods:
100 patients who had cataract surgery performed with a Toric intraocular lens were assessed postoperatively and the axis of the implanted lens was identified. Using vector calculations the error in predicted astigmatism was estimated and compared using different methods including the online Alcon Toric Calculator, the Holladay Toric Calculator and the Barrett online Toric calculator.
Results:
The centroid with the Barrett Toric Calculator was 0.05 diopters as opposed to 0.6 diopters with the Alcon Calculator and the percentage of patients within an astigmatic error within 0.5 Diopters of intended refraction was 66 % with the Barrett vs 24.2 % with the Alcon calculator.
Conclusions:
The Barrett Toric Calculator proved to be more accurate in predicting the required Toric intraocular lens power to correct pre-existing astigmatism.
