Abstract Details

Purpose:

To see which better out come for hard cataract

Setting:

Ophthalmology department Misurata Centarl Hospital Misurata - Libya

Methods:

The study included 50 patients with hard cataract underwent cataract surgery with intra ocular lenses implantation.The preopertive visual acuity ranged between Light perception and hand movement , and all cases preopertive astigmatism were less than 2D. The 50 patients devided into two groups .Group A 25 cases underwent sutureless manual small incision cataract surgery through 6mm straight sclero-corneal tunnel and psrterior chamber I O L 5.0 mm optical daimeter, one piece PMMA lenses were implanted.Group B 25 cases with hard cataract underwent phacoemulsification through 2.8 mm superior corneal incision and foldable IOL were implanted in the bag of the lenses.The uncorrected and best corrected visual acuity were measured as well as refracto-keratometery were performed in each examination time, in 1 week,1month,2month and after6 months

Results:

The induced astigmatism in group A ,it was 1.95 D at 1week,1.68 D at 1month,1.60 D at 2month and 1.2 D at 6 monts . While in group B ,it was 2.0 D in 1week, 1.90 D at 1month ,1.4 D at 2month and 1.0 D at 6 months.After 6 months post- operative patient whom gained visual acuity 6/6 in group A was 50% and in group B was 65%

Conclusions:

Surgically induced astigmatism is not significantly different in both groups of study ,our study showed safety and good vision out come in small cataract surgery using sclero-corneal tunnel incision
