Purpose:
To describe the efficacy, refractive outcomes and safety of the AT LISA 809M multifocal (Carl Zeiss Meditec) and AT LISA 909M multifocal (Carl Zeiss Meditec) intraocular lens in myopic Asian eyes with axial length greater than 24mm.
Setting:
Single National Public Eye Hospital
Methods:
Prospective analysis of all eyes undergoing phacoemulsification surgery which had implantation of either the AT LISA 809M or the AT LISA 909M IOL for the correction of cataracts and refractive error. All surgeries were performed by 1 surgeon at the Singapore National Eye Centre and all patients were followed-up for at least 4 months post-operation. Eyes with axial length of 24.0mm or greater were enrolled in this study. All patients underwent conventional phacoemulsification surgery followed by IOL implantation in the capsular bag. Pre-operative visual acuity and refractive error were recorded. Post-operative unaided and aided visual acuity, refractive error and complications were recorded.
Results:
69 eyes are included in this study to date (number will be likely to be higher by the time of the conference). There were 57 Chinese, 10 Malay and 2 Indian eyes. 33 eyes (47.8%) achieved unaided distance visual acuity of 20/20 after 1 month post-operation. 65 eyes (94.2%) achieved best-corrected visual acuity of 20/20 or better after surgery. 62 eyes (89.9%) achieved unaided near visual acuity of N5 at one month post-operation. Haloes or glare were reported in 10 eyes and significant posterior capsular opacity was noted in one eye 4 months after surgery. 1 eye required explantation due to inability to adapt to the IOL.
Conclusions:
The use of the AT LISA multifocal and multifocal toric IOL resulted in good post-operative unaided distance and near visual acuity in Asian eyes. However, patient selection is still important as some individuals may not adapt well to multifocal lenses.
