Abstract Details

Purpose:

To report a case series of brown discolouration of Abbott Medical Optics, USA acrylic IOLs (AABOO, ZCBOO and ZMBOO) post cataract operation

Setting:

A tertiary referral hospital, Singapore National Eye Centre

Methods:

Retrospective case series

Results:

We report a series of twelve eyes of eleven patients (mean age 67 years old) found to have evenly brown discolouration of varying degrees of acrylic intraocular lens (IOL) post phacoemulsification. This included 7 AABOO (single piece monofocal), 3 ZCBOO (single piece aspheric) and 2 ZMBOO (single piece piece multifocal) IOLs. The IOLs were free from deposits and retained their transparency. All had uneventful surgery except one who required anterior vitrectomy for posterior capsule rupture. One patient had uneventful operation but subsequently developed pigment dispersion glaucoma with tunnel vision and required a trabeculectomy. Pre and post operative visual acuity (VA) was log MAR 0.53 and log mar 0.14 respectively. 10 out of 11 patients did not report a drop in visual acuity but 6/11 (54.5%) were found to have diffuse colour discrimination defects. None had loss of more than 2 lines of best corrected VA. Mean time from operation to reporting date was 143 days (range 1-327 days). Three patients (two with preexisting glaucoma) were on glaucoma medications post operatively but VA was stable in one and improved in two patients. None required IOL explantation.

Conclusions:

AABOO, ZMBOO and ZCBOO acrylic IOLs were found to have brownish discolouration post operation which were not explanted. Visual acuity was not affected in majority of the patients but colour discrimination may be affected.
