Abstract Details

Purpose:

To determine if intraocular lens (IOL) exchange with insertion of a sulcal IOL is an effective treatment for the management of pseudophakic negative dysphotopsia (ND).

Setting:

All IOL exchanges were carried out by a single surgeon at the Department of Ophthalmology, Stoke Mandeville Hospital, UK.

Methods:

Participants in the study were recruited prospectively from clinic at the time of diagnosis, or retrospectively from the operating theatre logs by identifying all patients who had had IOL exchanges over a 4-year period (2009–2012).

Results:

5 eyes of 5 female patients with ND were treated with IOL exchange and replacement with a 3-piece IOL (Acrysof MA60AC [Alcon, UK]) inserted in the ciliary sulcus. All patients had a resolution of their ND symptoms. 1 patient had primary insertion of sulcal IOL in their fellow eyes and did not develop ND symptoms.

Conclusions:

IOL exchange with insertion of a 3-piece IOL in the ciliary sulcus appears to be a safe and effective treatment for the management of pseudophakic ND.
