Abstract Details

Purpose:

To report the cataract surgery using femtosecond laser and I&A system without phaco power

Setting:

To report the cataract surgery using femtosecond laser and I&A system without phaco power

Methods:

25 eyes of 25 patients with simple cataracts have been operated using femtosecond laser cataract surgery (FLCS) method since Dec 2013. The following examinations were performed before the surgery: vision acuity check, tonometry, biomicroscopy, A-scan, IOL-master. In all cases FLACS consisted from femtosecond laser assisted capsulorhexis and lens fragmentation were performed using Catalys femtolaser platform(Abbott Medical Optics Inc.), then followed by Aspiration of fragmented nucleus and cortex which is done by I&A system with MST phaco-free tips and IOL implantation. The femtosecond laser parameters were chosen in dependance of nuclear density. All procedures were performed in outpatient conditions with topical anesthesia. In postoperative period all patients received antibiotic and corticosteroid drops. The long-term observation period was 6 months. Uncorrected and corrected visual acuity and endothelial cell counts were measured at 1day, 7days, 1 month, 2months and 6 months postoperatively.

Results:

In 23 of all patients (92%) have got the FLSC without phacoemulsication. Mean density of cataract was 2.5±0.5. Mean volume of BSS during I&A was 60.5±15.2 ml and no phaco energy was needed. Only 2 cases with grade 4 cataract was failed the FLCS without phaco, followed by conversion phacoemulsification. There was no significant complication after FLSC. Postoperative endothelial cell counts at 2 months were 2435±325 cells/mm2 and there is no significant difference between pre- and postoperative endothelial cell counts.

Conclusions:

Femtosecond assisted cataract surgery without phaco power was a safe and effective in patients with moderate cataract.
