Abstract Details
Purpose:
We propose a simple, quick and inexpensive method to mark the preoperative meridian and to measure postoperative position of toric IOLs, intracorneal segments or arcuate incisions using a new app on a smartphone and the rotating slit of capable biomicroscope.
Setting:
Centro Oftálmico Varas Samaniego
Guayaquil, ECUADOR
Methods:
Once the desired axis of implantation is known, it is set on the app to match the alignment.
The smartphone is held in focus through the biomicroscope eyepiece, the beam is aligned so it matches the slit on the smartphone. In case of inadvertent rotation of the device, the app will self align to the desired axis even if the device rotates unnoticeably. The same principle is used backwards when determining the postoperative axis: the pupil is dilated, a narrow beam is aligned along the implant and the angle of implantation is recored with the smartphone through the biomicroscope.
Results:
We found very good correlation with other electronic markers at virtually no cost (except for the smartphone)
Conclusions:
This method is simple and straightforward. No other method known to us needed less investment, was faster than those using pictures or less expensive than any available marker.
