Abstract Details
Purpose:
To demonstrate a change in the rate of POE with the adoption of a pre-loaded injectable intraocular lens implant (Acrysof IQ).
Setting:
A single eye unit in a District General Hospital in Portsmouth (The Queen Alexandra Hospital, Cosham).
Methods:
A retrospective study of all cataract surgery performed, and examination of all post-operative endophthalmitis (POE) cases, between 2004 and 2012. Incidence rates of POE were compared between different methods of lens insertion, and chi squared analyses performed.
Results:
Over the 8 years a total of 25,924 cataract operations were carried out on 17,824 patients. There were 12 cases of POE. The pre-loaded injectable lenses had a lower incidence of POE (0.018) compared with all other methods of lens insertion (0.067). In particular, the pre-loaded lenses had a significantly lower rate of POE compared with the forceps-inserted method of lens insertion (p=0.04) and other injectable lenses which were manually folded before insertion into the injector (0.0001).
Conclusions:
Our study demonstrated a lower incidence of POE relating to the use of pre-loaded injectable intraocular lens implants over other methods of lens insertion, with other operative techniques remaining constant. The use of pre-loaded injectable lenses not only removes the direct contact of the lens with the ocular surface but also eliminates manual handling of the lens and any environmental exposure.
