Abstract Details
Purpose:
To compare the enhancement rates of the visual and refractive outcomes of our first 253 patients that underwent small incision lenticule extraction (RElex Smile) to correct myopia and myopic astigmatism, with Laser in situ keratomileusis (Lasik) enhancements rates as reported in peer reviewed literature.
Setting:
Goes Eye Centre, Antwerp, Belgium, Private Eye Centre, and Bels Laser Centre, Antwerp, Belgium
Methods:
Using the 500 kHz Visumax Femtosecond laser for correction of myopia and myopic astigmatism, a small stromal lenticule is created at a corneal depth of 120 ยต.. Retrospective outcome measures were corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA), manifest refraction during 3 months of follow-up, and enhancement rate. Pentacam topography was performed at each visit. Enhancement rates of our first 253 consecutive patients were compared with Laser in situ Keratomileusis (Lasik) enhancement rates as reported in peer reviewed literature.
Results:
After our first 253 consecutive Small Incision Lenticule Extraction (Smile) patients, not one enhancement procedure seemed necessary. Pre SR equiv was -5.48 +/-1.69 D At 3 months,, post SR equiv was -0.04 +/- 0.42 D. No patients lost BCVA. 87 % had a refractive outcome +/- 0.5 D. 98 % had an UCVA of 0.8 or more, 83 % had an UCVA of 1.0 or more.
A peer reviewed literature search showed enhancement rates in Laser in Situ Keratomileusis between 5 and 28 %. The difference between these rates after Laser in situ keratomileusis (Lasik) and our 0 % enhancement rates after Small Incision Lenticule Extraction (Smile) was statistically significant.
Conclusions:
At this moment, enhancement rates after Small Incision Lenticule Extraction (Smile) are lower than enhancement rates after Laser in situ keratomileusis (Lasik). Further studies and longer follow-up are necessary.
