Session Title: Challenge of Astigmatism Correction

Session Date/Time: Sunday 14/09/2014 | 17:00-18:30

Paper Time: 17:12

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To analyze the actual depth of femtosecond laser Ok! arcuate incisions and compare them to the intended depth and to determine the amount of corneal cylinder corrected by each arcuate incision and compare it to the intended correction.

Setting:

University of Colorado Eye Center, Aurora, Colorado, USA

Methods:

Arcuate incisions were performed on 12 eyes of 12 patients using the LenSx (Alcon Laboratories) femtosecond laser, at the time of cataract surgery. Post-operatively, Visante OCT images were obtained of the arcuate incisions. The actual depth of the incisions were then compared to the intended depth of the incisions. In addition, the amount of cylinder corrected was measured at 3 months post-op and compared to the intended cylinder correction.

Results:

The average depth of each incision was 88% (range 67% - 98%) of the intended depth. No incisions were deeper than the intended depth. The average actual cylinder correction was 72% (range 58% - 105%) of the intended correction. One patient was over-correctedand had the axis flipped.

Conclusions:

In our hospital, the LenSx (Alcon Laboratories) femtosecond laser appeared to under treat the depth of each arcuate incision. This 'under correction' appears to correlate with an under correction of the intended cylinder correction as well. ***Of note, by the time of the ESCRS Congress we will have complete data on a much larger cohort of patients.
