Purpose:
To compare the refractive results of Intralase femtosecond laser using MMC in hyperopic patients versus without applying MMC
Setting:
Clínica NOVOVISION. Madrid, Spain
Methods:
A retrospective study was performed to analyze Femtosecond refractive results in hyperopic eyes. Consecutive patients were divided in two groups: one applying MMC (0,02% for 5 seconds) on the stromal bed after excimer laser was performed, and other without MMC application. Flaps were created with the IntraLase femtosecond laser. All procedures were performed by the same surgeon using the same excimer laser (Esiris, Schwind). We evaluate the uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA) at 1 day, 1 week, 1 month and 3 months after surgery and the refractive errors at the 3 months postoperative follow-up visit.
Results:
76 eyes were included in each group. There were no differences either in the preoperative BCVA or age between groups. The preoperative hyperopic sphere was +3.20±0.80D in the MMC group and +3.50D±1.10D in the non MMC group, the preoperative astigmatism was -1.15D±1.2D and -1.20D±1.30D in the MMC and non MMC group respectively and the preoperative Snellen BSCVA was 1.0±0.1 for both groups (p>0.05 for all comparisons). There was no significant difference in UCVA between groups at any postoperative visit, except at the 3 month post-op visit, when UCVA was 0.93 in the MMC group versus 0.87 in the non MMC group (p=0.03). The residual sphere at the 3 month post-op visit was +0.23±0.55 in the MMC group and +0.51±0.72 in the non MMC group, (p=0.007). 76.3% of the eyes in MMC group were within ±0.50 D vs 55.5% in the non MMC group (p=0.006) and 90.5% and 82.5% were within ±1.00D in MMC and non MMC groups (p>0.05).
Conclusions:
Hyperopic eyes treated with MMC showed less regression 3 months after surgery and had better UCVA and a smaller residual sphere, than the non MMC ones. Furthermore, the use of MMC during Femtosecond surgery seemed to have a better predictability (higher number of patients within ±0.50D at 3 months) than when MMC was not applied.
