Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate long-term impact of bilateral cataract surgery on complication rates, visual assessment, influence of age at surgery in microphthalmic eyes upto 4 years.

Setting:

Iladevi Cataract & IOL Research Centre, Raghudeep Eye Hospital, Gurukul Road, Memnagar, Ahmedabad - 380052

Methods:

Prospective, longitudinal study with microphthalmos undergoing congenital cataract surgery included

Results:

The mean age of 72 eyes of 36 children was 4.8 ± 6.2 mths Posterior synechiae in 10(27.8%),secondary glaucoma in 11/36(30.6 %). Trabeculectomy performed in 4 eyes. Despite trabeculectomy,2 eyes had uncontrolled IOP and underwent Ahmed valve implantation 3.8 years postoperatively. VAO in 4(11.1 %) eyes and all had secondary procedures. Infants less than 3mths of age, secondary glaucoma developed in 10/22(45.5%), VAO in 3/21(14.3%),post.synechiae in 6/22(27.3%) eyes.Loss of vision after surgery in 2 eyes.

Conclusions:

Long-term results of study suggest acceptable rate of serious postop.complications & good visual outcome, in microphthalmic eyes with bilateral congenital cataract after early surgery.
