Abstract Details
Purpose:
To define and to investigate the safety and efficacy of combined clear corneal and pars plicata approach technique for paediatric cataract surgeries with intraocular lens (IOL) implantation
Setting:
Clinical practice of interventional case series / Istanbul University, Cerrahpasa School of Medicine, Surp Pırgic Armenian Hospital
Methods:
28 eyes of 18 patients including 8 bilateral (all congenital) and 12 unilateral (3 congenital, 9 traumatic) cases with an age of 51,555± 40,255 months (range 14 to 144 months) were included in the study without any randomisation or masking procedure. Patients were followed up for 37,411± 18,130 months (range 12 to 84 months). Surgery was performed in 2 steps: 1) Clear corneal cataract extraction by bimanual I-A (irrigation aspiration) technique and unibody foldable acrylic IOL implantation without any corneal suture. 2) Bimanual pars plicata I-V (irrigation vitrectomy) technique for anterior vitrectomy and posterior capsulectomy. Main outcome measures followed throughout the study were secondary cataract formation, glaucoma and retinal complications.
Results:
All cases got successful IOL implantation. Three over 28 eyes needed secondary clear corneal bimanual surgical approach to clean the secondary cataract developed after 1 to 3 months. Neither glaucoma nor retinal or other anterior or posterior segment complication was observed.
Conclusions:
Combined clear corneal and pars plicata approach seems very effective and safe surgical technique for paediatric cataract surgery with IOL implantation.
