Abstract Details
Purpose:
To assess the safety and efficacy of a new acrylic intraocular lens (IOL) for microincision cataract surgery (MICS). The IOL comprises an acrylic material with a 22% water content, 4 angulated haptics and an aberration-free aspheric optic.
Setting:
Bahçesehir University Faculty of Medical , Medical Park Hospital Göztepe, Istanbul, Turkey
Methods:
A single centre, single surgeon study where 44 eyes (27 patients) were implanted with the MICS IOL (Incise; B+L) following phacoemulsification (Stellaris; B+L). The Viscoject 1.5 inserter was used for IOL implantation. Visual acuity, refraction, average phaco time (APT) and effective phaco time (EPT) were assessed.
Results:
Twenty seven subjects (19 Female; 8 Male) had a mean patient age of 79 ±+7.96 years (range: 57 to 84). Lens power implanted ranged from 18D to 23.5D and incision size ranged from 1.3 to 2.4 mm. A wound-assist implantation technique was used for the 1.3mm incisions. Mean pre-operative corrected visual acuity (CDVA) was 0.7 logMAR (20/100 Snellen). Intra-operatively, median APT was 25.4s, ranging from 5.9s in cataract grade 1+ to 146s in cataract grade 5+. Median EPT was 4.7s (range: 0.6 to 30.5s). At one week post-op (32 eyes), mean CDVA was 0.1±0.06 logMAR (20/25 Snellen) with an average gain of 4 lines. Mean refractive spherical equivalent (MRSE) was -0.30±0.9D. At one month post-op (16 eyes), median CDVA was 0.0 logMAR (20/20) (range: 0.0 to 0.7; one subject with age-related macular degeneration). Median MRSE was -0.2D. Further longer term follow-up data will be presented.
Conclusions:
Early experience finds the Incise IOL is safe and effective, providing a good improvement in visual acuity.
