Abstract Details

Purpose:

To compare of accommodation amplitude and visual acuity of the Akkolens Lumina with a monofocal intraocular lens.

Setting:

Vissum Corporacion Oftalmologica, Alicante, Spain and the Resbiomed-Vissum Sofia Eye Clinic, Sofia, Bulgaria.

Methods:

Prospective, non-randomized, comparative clinical study included a total of 25 eyes that have cataract surgery. According to the IOL implanted two groups are differentiated: Group A, 18 eyes implanted with the accommodative Akkolens Lumina IOL and Group B, 8 eyes implanted with the monofocal Acrysof SA60AT. The follow-up was 12 months. Main outcomes measures were uncorrected distance visual acuity (UVA), corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), uncorrected near visual acuity (UNVA), distance corrected near visual acuity (DCNVA), manifest refraction, defocus curve, mesopic contrast sensitivity and objective accommodation with the WAM aberrometer.

Results:

No statistical differences were detected between the accommodative IOL and the control group in UVA and CVA (p≥0.45). Statistical significant differences were found between the accommodative IOL and monofocal group in UNVA and DCNVA postoperatively (p≤0.01), with better values for the group A. In the defocus curve, significant better visual acuities were observed for group A (p≤0.02) for defocus levels from -4.0 to -0.5D. Better depth of focus was obtained in group A for visual acuities of 0.8, 0.6 and 0.4 (p≤0.02). No statistical differences were detected between groups in mesopic contrast sensitivity (p≥0.28).

Conclusions:

The Akkolens Lumina successfully restores the visual function with good near visual acuity due to the accommodation provided. Contrast sensitivity is similar to a monofocal IOL.
