Abstract Details
Purpose:
To compare the development of posterior capsular opacification (PCO) and frequency of Nd:YAG capsulotomy between a silicone and a hydrophobic acrylic 3-piece intraocular lens (IOL) 2 years after surgery.
Setting:
Department of Ophthalmology, Medical University of Vienna, Austria
Methods:
Sixty patients (120 eyes) were included in this prospective randomized trial with intra-patient comparison. Each patient randomly received a silicone IOL (KS-3Ai, Dr. Schmidt) in one eye and a hydrophobic acrylic IOL (KS-Xs, Dr. Schmidt) in the contralateral eye. Eyes were examined 1 week and 2 years after surgery. Digital retro-illuminated images of each eye were evaluated using a fully automated quantification of after-cataract software (AQUA). The Nd:YAG laser rate was noted.
Results:
There was no statistically significant difference in posterior capsule opacification (PCO) 2 years after cataract surgery: An objective PCO score of 0 [0; 4.55] was found for the silicone IOL group and of 0 [0; 3.63] for the hydrophobic acrylic IOL group (p=0.517). At the 2-year follow-up, both groups presented with comparable YAG rates: 6.9% compared to 3.4% (p = 0.134).
Conclusions:
Both IOLs showed low PCO and YAG capsulotomy rates at the 2-year follow-up. Further Follow-up is planed.
