Abstract Details
Purpose:
To evaluate visual and the optical performance of patients implanted monocularly with the small aperture hydrophobic intraocular lens (HP-SA-IOL).
Setting:
Manila, Philippines and Salzburg, Austria
Methods:
Ongoing, prospective, non-randomized clinical evaluation. Eleven patients, presenting for cataract surgery, were implanted monocularly with the HP-SA-IOL (AcuFocus, Irvine, CA) after uneventful phacoemulsification. The HP-SA-IOL is a single-piece intraocular lens with a centrally located opaque annular mask. The mask has a 3.23mm outer diameter, a 1.36mm central aperture and contains 1040 microperforations ranging in size from 10 - 19 microns. The aspheric IOL optic has a 360-degree square edge design and is made from a glistening-free hydrophobic acrylic material. In one patient, the HP-SA-IOL was implanted 4-months post-monofocal IOL implantation in the patients other eye; three patients had a monofocal IOL implanted in their fellow eye after HP-SA-IOL implantation; and all other HP-SA-IOL patients maintained their natural crystalline lens in their fellow eye. Visual and optical performances were evaluated by measuring visual acuity and defocus curve at 6-months after HP-SA-IOL implantation. ETDRS charts were used to measure uncorrected distance, intermediate and near visual acuities. Binocular visual acuities are reported in mean letter score ± standard deviation.
Results:
Uncorrected binocular visual acuities for distance, intermediate and near are 50.6 ± 3.8 (20/20), 48.5 ± 6.0 (20/20), 45.5 ± 6.4 (20/25) respectively. 20/25 or better uncorrected binocular visual acuities was achieved by 100%, 82% and 91% of patients at distance, intermediate and near respectively. The HP-SA-IOL defocus curve follows a similar curve to the KAMRA corneal inlay (AcuFocus, Irvine, CA). HP-SA-IOL patients show continuous functional vision of 20/40 or better over a 4.0D range. When paired with a small amount of myopia of -0.75D to -1.00D, the HP-SA-IOL improves the visual acuity over a larger range of intermediate and near distances, with minimal effect to distance vision.
Conclusions:
Early results demonstrate that monocular implantation of an HP-SA-IOL provides a continuous, broad range of vision resulting in excellent visual acuity across all distances.
