A new artificial eye for wetlab training in the use of iris hooks, capsule support hooks and insertion of capsular tension ring (CTR)

Abstract Details



Purpose:

To present the use of an artificial eye for wetlab training in the use of iris hooks, capsule support hooks and CTR and to get the feedback about its usefulness.

Setting:

Tertiary level eye institute namely Venu Eye Institute & Research Centre, New Delhi, India.

Methods:

In difficult surgical situation like non dilating pupil and zonular dehiscence use of iris hooks, capsule hooks and CTR makes the life of surgeon comfortable and leads to a satisfactory outcome of surgery. To master the use of these peroperative gadgets takes a long time because one does not encounter these situations very often during the surgical training period. To facilitate this training we have developed dummy eyes on which a surgeon can master the technique of using these devices. These devices has developed and tested at Venu Eye Institute & Research Centre, New Delhi, India - A tertiary eye care centre. The main components of the final prototype consist of two modules.A flexible cornea of silicon rubber is common to both and can be incised with a knife to make entry ports. The cornea is fixed in a plastic casing which can be mounted on a stand for stability. The iris module consists of a flexible iris with a central 2mm pupil. The capsule module has a capsular bag with a capsulorhexis opening and dehiscence of the zonules in one quadrant.The iris module consists of a flexible iris with a central 2mm pupil. Results:

These three dimensional artificial eye modules accurately simulates a non dilating pupil in one and zonular dehiscence in the other.The trainee can practice in wetlab the steps of making stab incisions in the cornea, placement of the iris and capsule support hooks and insertion of CTR in the bag.• Making stab incisions in the cornea • Insertion of the hooks • Pulling the iris/capsule • Locking the hook in place • Insertion of CTR in the bag

Conclusions:

These artificial eyes are ideal for training residents in the use of iris hooks, capsule support hooks and insertion of CTR. This ensures that the surgeon is well prepared to handle the situations of a non dilating pupil and zonular dehiscence when encountered during surgery. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
