Abstract Details

Purpose:

To study different methods of evaluation of clinical teachers, with special emphasis on students' evaluation of teachers.

Setting:

Literature search using medical and educational search engines .

Methods:

An extensive search in the literature was done using medical as well as educational search engines. Medline/Pubmed was the main medical search engine used while ERIC ; Education Resources Information Centre was the main search engine for medical education. Other searches were done in Bio Medical Reference Collection, and Academic medicine websites. Search word used were clinical teaching evaluations, teachers assessments, clinical tutors ratings, clinical teaching performance and faculty evaluation. Studies were limited to English language but there was no time limit. All studies concerning clinical teaching evaluation, in medical and dental schools, whether in ambulatory care or in-patient care settings were included. Studies concerned with allied health and university settings other than medical were excluded.

Results:

Methods of teachers evaluations include student achievement measures, on-the-job evaluation, performance measures , use of portfolios, students' evaluation of teachers, peers, administrators and teachers' self-evaluation . Students' evaluation of faculty , despite its pitfalls, still one of the most widely used method of clinical teachers' evaluation. Students' perception of ideal clinical teachers includes professionalism, acted as a rol-model, explained decisions, treated students with respect, willing to help, knowledge of subject matter and ability to present information in a logical sequence.

Conclusions:

Proper and objective evaluation of clinical teaching still poses an educational challenge. Students' evaluation of medical teachers is one of the modalities most widely used. Professionalism and being a role-model are among the traits of ideal teachers as perceived by medical students. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
