Abstract Details

Purpose:

To determine the results of Epi-LASIK in eyes with low to moderate refractive error and influence of retaining or removing epithelial flap on outcome.

Setting:

Medical Research Foundation, 18, College Road, Nungambakkam, Chennai 600 006 India

Methods:

172 eyes that underwent Epi-LASIK between December 2010 and August 2012 were retrospectively analyzed. Mean preoperative sphere was -3.5+1.59 DS and cylinder -1.14 +0.65 DC. 41 eyes had myopia. 131 had compound myopic astigmatism. Follow up was at 1,3 and 6 months.

Results:

Epithelial flap was retained in102 eyes and removed in 70 eyes. 91.17% eyes achieved 20/20 or better unaided vision at last follow up. 96% were within + 0.5 D. 26% gained 1 to 3 lines. Correction ratio was 0.99. 81% of the eyes had no corneal haze. There was no significant difference in postoperative symptoms, healing or refractive results between flap retained and removed eyes.

Conclusions:

Epi -LASIK with Allegretto Wave Excimer Laser is safe and effective for correction of low to moderate refractive error. Retaining or removing epithelial flap did not influence healing or refractive outcome. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
