Three month visual outcomes after small incision lenticule extraction (ReLEx® SMILE) compared to LASIK for myopia and myopic astigmatism

Abstract Details



Purpose:

To report the three month visual and refractive outcomes of small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) for myopic eyes using the VisuMax femtosecond laser compared to a group of LASIK eyes.

Setting:

Ho Chi Minh City Eye Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

Methods:

This was a retrospective analysis of 72 consecutive myopic SMILE and 32 LASIK procedures performed using the VisuMax femtosecond laser at Ho Chi Minh City Eye Hospital. For SMILE, a small stromal lenticule is created, dissected using an Chansue dissector, and extracted through a 2.5 mm sidecut. Lenticule was inspected for possible defects and pocket was rinsed with BSS. Being a completely an intrastromal procedure, SMILE has lack of influence from room humidity, temperature and changes in an air currents. LASIK flaps were created with VisuMax and excimer ablation was done with Mel 80. Outcome measures were corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA), and manifest refraction during 3 months of follow-up.

Results:

104 eyes were treated. 23 % male and 67 % female patients. Mean pre-operative spherical equivalent (SE) for LASIK was -6.18 +/- 2.62 D and mean pre-operative SE for SMILE was -4.54 +/- 1.89 D. Data analysis was done at 3 months follow up. SE for LASIK was -0.06 +/-0.43 and SE for SMILE was -0.04 +/- 0.31. 88% of LASIK and 95% of SMILE eyes were within =/-0.5 D of attempted refraction. 80 % of LASIK and 89% of SMILE had 20/20 or better UDVA. 7% of LASIK eyes and 20% of SMILE eyes gained 2 or more lines of CDVA, and no loss of CDVA for LASIK and smile were reported.

Conclusions:

Visual outcomes achieved in this consecutive series of myopic SMILE procedures using the VisuMax femtosecond laser were excellent, and comparable or better than modern Femtolasik techniques. Larger studies are required to confirm. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
