Flap amputation treatment for persistent symptomatic recurrent post-LASIK ingrowth

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To report the outcome of flap amputation as a treatment for recurrent symptomatic post-LASIK epithelial ingrowths.

Setting:

Hadassah Medical Center - Hebrew University Hospital, Ophthalmology Department, Jerusalem, Israel

Methods:

We report 2 cases of unilateral recurrent epithelial ingrowth post-LASIK surgery after multiple attempts (5 and 9) to remove the ingrowth. Both patients remained with photophobia, ocular discomfort, stromal interface scarring and impaired visual acuity. Both eyes underwent flap amputation with intra-operative application of mitomycin C 0.02%.

Results:

After flap amputation complete epithelialization of the cornea occurred within 1 week in both cases. Both patients had improvement of ocular discomfort and no photophobia. There was no central haze in both cases. Best corrected visual acuity with contact lens improved from 6/15 to 6/6 in one case and from 6/12 to 6/9 in the second case.

Conclusions:

Flap amputation is an effective treatment for refractory recurrent symptomatic post-LASIK ingrowth with impaired visual acuity. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
