Experience with a new segmented rotational asymmetric multifocal IOL

Purpose:

To assess visual outcomes, safety, predictability, and patient satisfaction with the new refractive rotational asymmetric multifocal IOL after refractive lens exchange.

Setting:

Eye and Laser institute, Port Elizabeth, South Africa

Methods:

Fifty eyes of 25 patients that underwent bilateral refractive lens exchange with SBL-3 lens (Lenstec, Barbados Inc.) were evaluated. The mean preoperative refractive sphere was +2.26 ± 1.91 D (range -3.25 D to +4.75 D) and the mean cylinder -0.47 ± 0.56 D (range -1.75 to 0.00 D). At three months postoperatively, near, intermediate and distance visual acuity were measured monocularly and binocularly - uncorrected and with the best distance correction. Additionally, defocus curve, Pelli-Robson contrast sensitivity and patient satisfaction were evaluated.

Results:

At 3 months, 90% eyes were within ± 0.50 D of emmetropia. The mean postoperative UDVA was -0.01 ± 0.07 logMAR monocularly and -0.05 ± 0.06 logMAR binocularly. The mean monocular and binocular UNVA (40 cm) were 0.12 ± 0.11 logMAR and 0.08 ± 0.09 logMAR, respectively. Intermediate VA (70 cm) was 0.16 ± 0.12 logMAR monocularly and 0.13 ± 0.15 logMAR binocularly. The defocus curve showed a slight drop off for intermediate VA, but generally a good range of vision was achieved. Pelli-robson contrast sensitivity values were similar to the values expected for the age category treated in this study. No intraoperative or postoperative complications occurred during the 3 months follow-up.

Conclusions:

The new refractive rotationally asymmetric IOL provided good range of vision for near, intermediate and distance. Long-term follow-ups are necessary to evaluate the performance of this IOL. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
