Experience with trifocal IOL implantation in refractive lens exchange

Abstract Details



Purpose:

To evaluate the clinical performance, efficacy and safety, visual outcomes and optical quality of patient with a new diffractive multifocal intraocular lens (IOL) with distance, near and intermediate focus trifocal IOL.

Setting:

Mehta International Eye Institute

Methods:

This retrospective study comprises 200 eyes (100 consecutive patients) patients with cataract or presbyopia, no ocular or systemic co morbidity and no more than 0.50 dioptres of preoperative corneal astigmatism underwent phacoemulsification and implantation of a trifocal IOL. Uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA), best corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), intermediate and near vision (35 and 70 cm) with the best distance correction, residual refractive spherical equivalent, were evaluated one day (for far vision), one week, one month, 6 months and one year postoperatively, undesired visual symptoms, patient dissatisfaction, and incidence of posterior capsule opacification were analyzed. Targeted refraction was emmetropia for all cases.

Results:

The mean age patient was 52 years (ranging 42 to 65 years old). The mean spherical equivalent at 6 month was -0.09 ± 0.47 (p= 0.69). The mean uncorrected distance visual acuity improved at 6 months from 0.70 ± 0.34 to 0.18 ±0.13 logMAR (p<0.01). The mean corrected visual acuity, corrected distance near visual acuity and corrected distance intermediate visual acuity at 6 moths postoperatively were 0.05 ±0.06, 0.16 ±0.13 and 0.17 ± 0.09 log MAR respectively. The ocular high order aberration (HOA) at 6 months was 0.74 ± 0.25 µm and no significant difference with 1 month postoperatively ocular HOA (p =0.18 Wilcoxon test). No statistical difference was observed in the internal HOA between 1 and 6 months with RMS value 0.53 ± 0.22 and 0.48 ± 0.20 respectively (p= 0.326). The internal HOA aberration show a few value of spherical aberration.

Conclusions:

Trifocal IOL implantation after phacoemulsification was a safe and effective method for pseudophakic presbyopia correction in patients at all distances. FINANCIAL INTEREST: One of more of the authors... receives consulting fees, retainer, or contract payments from a competing company
