Abstract Details
Purpose:
To determine if an apodized, aspheric, diffractive and refractive intraocular lens (SV25TO) ® is able to improve the visual quality and to reduce the degree of visual distortion.
Setting:
Laselens. Ophthalmology Institute
Methods:
A prospective, longitudinal, interventional and descriptive study. We study 24 eyes of 12 patients with senile cataract, both gender ≥ 40 years old, keratometric values equal or less than 1D. Underwent phacoemulsification and a diffractive, refractive, apodized intraocular lens was implanted (AcrySof ReSTOR ®, SV25TO ®) by a single surgeon (ESD). The main outcome measures, over a 6 month follow up with visual acuity, contrast sensitivity (CVS- 1000E Vector VisionTM ®) and optical aberrations (Zywave B & L)®. Nonparametric tests were made (Levene's test and ANOVA). A level of significance is p≤ 0.05.
Results:
The Female sex predominates with 69.23%. The far (0.29 ± 0.22) and near (1.86 ± 0.75) visual acuity improved in all our patients (ANOVA p= 0.00). Contrast sensitivity evaluated in spatial frequency ROW (CPD), enhanced in all patients (ANOVA p = 0.00). Optical aberrations in photopic conditions showed a significant difference in the sphere (Levene's test p= 0.007) and in scotopic conditions the difference in average would be associate with the IOL (ANOVA p= 0.014). Lower order aberrations (defocus), were not affected in photopic conditions (ANOVA p= 0, 181) nor in scotopic conditions ANOVA (p=0,366). Higher order aberrations (coma) happen because of the inclination of the lens or its descentration.
Conclusions:
There is an increase in contrast sensitivity in patients with intraocular lens SV25TO. The glares make special reference to the diffraction of the pupil and its relation with the size of the optical zone of the lens FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
