Effect of anteriorly-offset haptics in capsular stability of one-piece hydrophobic acrylic aspheric intraocular lens

Purpose:
To evaluate the 1-year stability of a one-piece hydrophobic acrylic aspheric intraocular lens (IOL) with haptics anteriorly offset.

Miyata Eye Hospital
Methods:
The prospective comparative case series comprised 28 eyes of 18 patients who were implanted with the one-piece hydrophobic acrylic aspheric IOL with haptics anteriorly offset, and 32 eyes of 32 patients implanted with a three-piece IOL with the same optic platform and material, except for angled open-loop haptics. The best-corrected distance visual acuity, refractive prediction error, IOL decentration and tilt, and anterior chamber depth (ACD) during the 12-month follow-up period were compared.
Results:
There was no difference in the postoperative visual function between the two IOL groups. The one-piece IOL was associated with significant refractive prediction errors toward hyperopia (P<0.001), smaller decentrations (P<0.006), and deeper ACDs (P<0.004), while the IOL tilt did not differ.
Conclusions:
The one-piece IOL was stable in the capsular bag during the 1-year follow-up period with less decentration. The refractive prediction error and ACD in the one-piece IOL demonstrated closer contact between the IOL anterior and the posterior capsule.
