Abstract Details
Purpose:
To correlate the through-focus image quality analysis obtained in an optical bench with the defocus curves after implantation of two multifocal and a monofocal IOLs.
Setting:
Vissum Corporacion, Miguel Hernández University, University of Rochester
Methods:
This study included a total of 71 eyes of 42 patients with ages ranging between 36-84 years. Three groups of eyes were differentiated: group A, 28 eyes implanted with the bifocal rotationally asymmetric multifocal IOL Lentis Mplus-LS-312; group B, 22 eyes implanted with the diffractive trifocal FineVision IOL and group C, 21 eyes implanted with the monofocal Acrysof SA60AT IOL. Optical bench through-focus performance was evaluated by calculating cross-correlation coefficients and comparing the likenesses of captured images of a resolution target and a perfect reference image.
Results:
In the defocus curve significantly better visual acuity was present in eyes implanted with the bifocal IOL. This difference among curves reached statistical significance for the levels of defocus of -4.00, -2.50, -2.00, -1.5, -1.0, -0.5 and +1.0D (p≤0.04). Significant and strong correlations were found between the cross-correlation coefficients and decimal visual acuity scale in all groups (group A; r=0.90, p<0.01, group B; r=0.83, p<0.01, group C; r=0.98 p<0.01). For these relationships, a linear predicting models with predictability (R2) of 0.795 for group A, R2 of 0.776 for group B and R2 of 0.953 for group C was obtained.
Conclusions:
A very significant correlation were found between decimal visual acuity and cross-correlation coefficients in all groups. The bifocal IOL showed to be more effective providing a more accurate visual rehabilitation than the trifocal and monofocal IOLs. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
