Abstract Details

Purpose:

To present outcomes of implantation of add-on Sulcoflex Multifocal® intraocular lens in pseudophakic eyes.

Setting:

Ufa Eye Research Institute, Russia

Methods:

The sulcus fixated Sulcoflex Multifocal® pseudophakic supplementary refractive hydrophilic acrylic intraocular lenses (Rayner, UK) were implanted in 9 emmetropic eyes and in 5 eyes with residual ametropia between -2.5 to +1.5 D. The patients were between the ages of 28 and 69 years. These patients underwent a phacoemulsification with implantation of monofocal hydrophilic or hydrophobic acrylic intraocular lenses into the capsular bag between 3 months to 4 years before Sulcoflex Multifocal® intraocular lens implantation. We measured the distance and near uncorrected and best corrected visual acuity (UCVA and BCVA), the mesopic achromatic and chromatic contrast sensitivity functions, and the higher order aberrations.

Results:

The postoperative mean distance UCVA (0.93 +/- 0.07) was equal to preoperative mean distance BCVA (0.95 +/- 0.08). The postoperative mean near UCVA (0.61 +/- 0.05) was higher than preoperative mean near UCVA (0.21 +/- 0.04). Spectacle independence was 100% for distance and for near. In all spatial frequencies the achromatic and chromatic contrast sensitivity slightly decreased by 0.1-3.0 decibels after multifocal supplementary intraocular lenses implantation. The mean higher order aberrations increased to 0.74 ± 0.09 µm after surgery, compared to 0.47 +/- 0.08 µm before surgery. However, all patients reported high level of satisfaction.

Conclusions:

The implantation of Sulcoflex Multifocal® supplementary intraocular lenses provides a high level of spectacle independence, a good distance and near uncorrected visual acuity and high level of patient satisfaction. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
