A new intraocular lens with extended depth of focus

Abstract Details
Purpose:
A new IOL with pericentral negative spherical aberration was designed to provide extended depth of focus and reading ability to implanted eyes. The first results in patients bilaterally implanted are reported here.
Setting:
Ophthalmic Unit, Dept. of Neurosciences, Hospital and University of Verona, Italy
Methods:
A series of 20 patients received the new Mini Well IOL (SIFI Medtech, Catania, Italy) at microincision cataract surgery. Inclusion critera were potential visual acuity 0.1 logMAR or better, corneal astigmatism lower tahn 1 D, and no other ocular disease. Two months after second eye surgery they were examined for visual acuity, ocular aberrations, contrast sensitivity, spectacle use, and photopsias.
Results:
Postoperative refraction was -0.32±0.43 D, and astigmatism was 0.72±0.21 D. UDVA was 0.2 log MAR in 1 eye, and binocular UDVA was above 0.1 logMAR in every patient. DCNVA (40 cm) was 0.12 logMAR in 1 patient, and was above 0.1 logMAR in 19 patients. Spherical aberration was -0.03±0.02 μ within the central 4 mm, and +0.95±0.18 μ within the central 6 mm. Coma levels were similar as with aspheric IOLs. Aberration-based optical quality expressed as Strehl ratio was 0.143±0.075. Contrast sensitivity levels were between those of monofocal IOLs and those of diffractive multifocal IOLs. No patient was using spectacle correction for near reading. No patients reported glare, halos, or photopsias.
Conclusions:
The new Mini Well IOL with pericentral negative spherical aberration provided extended depth of focus to the patients we implanted, providing near vision without the drawbacks typical of diffractive multifocal IOLs. The new optical concept implemented in this IOL might offer the advantages of both monofocal and multifocal IOLs.
