Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate quality of vision after implantation of multifocal hydrophobic acrylic IOLs with glistenings and to determine clinical factors associated with glistenings.

Setting:

Ophtahlmology department, Bordeaux University Hospital, France.

Methods:

Prospective study from consecutive eyes inclusions from September 2012 to March 2013. Glistening was measured by slitlamp examination and photography, quality of vision was assessed by corrected visual acuity, reading speed and best reading distance (Salzburg Reading Desk), defocus curve, contrast sensitivity and aberrometry. All participants had to undergo a complete ophthalmologic examination and had to fill the NEI-RQL 42 questionnaire.

Results:

102 eyes were consecutively included. Glistenings occurred in 65% of eyes, 20% were mild glistenings, 45 % were moderate to severe glistenings. Glistenings had no significant impact on visual acuity, reading speed, best reading distance, defocus curve, contrast sensitivity and aberrometry. Glistenings was related to 'glare' (p=0,01). Glistening density was related to dioptric intraocular lens power (p=0,04).

Conclusions:

Glistenings do not impair visual function measurements, but have an impact on patients' visual symptoms such as glare. High dioptric power was related to more severe glistening grades. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
