Abstract Details

Purpose:

Evaluate the safety and efficacy of a new small aperture intraocular implant used to extend depth of focus of pseudophakic eyes.

Setting:

Cançado-Trindade Eye Institute

Methods:

Five pseudophakic patients with monofocal IOL and poor uncorrected near visual acuity were enrolled. Secondary piggyback implantation of this new device was performed at least one month after cataract surgery. Uncorrected and best corrected near and distance visual acuity, pseudoaccomodation and visual field examination were analysed prior and after implantation. Complete ophthalmic examination was performed to evaluate possible ocular complications.

Results:

There was a remarkable improvement in uncorrected visual acuity, especially at near. Complications were not observed. Visual field examination remained normal after implantation.

Conclusions:

Based on the well-known pinhole effect, this new intraocular implant was able to safely extend depth of focus of pseudophakic patients, thus improving uncorrected visual acuity. FINANCIAL INTEREST: One of more of the authors... gains financially from product or procedure presented
