Purpose:

Clinical evaluation of functional results and quality of vision after bilateral implantation of a bioanalogic, polyfocal intraocular lens WIOL-CF in presbyopic patients

Setting:

Department of Ophthalmology, University Centre of Ophthalmology and Oncology Silesian University of Medicine, Katowice, Poland

Methods:

The WIOL-CF bioanalogic, polyfocal intraocular lens (MEDICEM) were implanted bilaterally in 25 patients (50 eyes) after phacoemulsification with max. 2 weeks between the first and second eye implantation. Mean age 60.1 years, (40-72 years). Three month data from 8 participating centres from 7 countries have been evaluated in this non-interventional, multicentre, prospective observational registry Patient with any other ophthalmic pathology were excluded. Follow-up examinations were performed two weeks and three months after surgery including uncorrected and corrected visual acuity (VA) for far, near and intermediate distances, subjective refraction. The quality of vision, glare, halos, spectacle independence and the personal satisfaction of the patients was assessed with a questionnaire

Results:

Three months after implantation mean uncorrected distance VA was 1.06 (decimal) and 100% of patients are better than 0.8. The mean uncorrected near VA (40cm) was J2.2 and intermediate VA (70cm) was J1+. Statistically significant difference in pre- and postoperative UCDVA, UCIVA and UCNVA (p<0.05) was reported. In 98%of eyes post-op UCDVA was better than pre-op CDVA, in 2% (4 eye) was the same. 94% patients did not need glasses for daily activities, driving and reading and 94% expressed subjective satisfaction. Any patient did not report serious or disturbing optical phenomena, only 24% reported mild glare or halo.

Conclusions:
