Multifocal IOLs vs corneal inlays for presbyopia surgery

Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate and compare the outcomes of multifocal IOLs and corneal inlays in the correction of presbyopia.

Setting:

Hospital Arrábida Porto Portugal

Methods:

125 presbyopic patients were implanted bilaterally with multifocal IOLs (Restor +3.00) and 50 presbyopic patients were implanted unilaterally with corneal inlay (Kamra in the non-dominant eye). The outcome measures were far and near visual acuity ,need of glasses and patient satisfaction. Minimum follow-up was 6 months.

Results:

Concerning far visual acuity, 90% of the IOL group had 20/20 and 100% had 20/25 or better. In the Kamra group (implanted eye) 71% had 20/20 and 100% had 20/40 or better. Concerning near visual acuity In the Inlay group 72% read better than J2 compared to 94% of the IOL group. Patients were very satisfied in 83% of the IOL group compared to 66% of the Kamra group. No surgical or post-op complications were observed in the two groups.

Conclusions:

Both methods are safe and effective in the correction of presbyopia. Results are slightly better with multifocals however due to decrease of contrast sensitivity, multifocal IOLs are not recommended for emmetropic patients, where corneal inlays are safer. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
