Abstract Details

Purpose:

To report the results of defocus curves and intermediate vision with a new apodized diffractive IOL in which the apodization was adjusted to benefit intermediate vision and comparison with results reported in the literature for trifocal IOLs.

Setting:

Private refractive surgery center

Methods:

in 20 eyes of 10 patients implanted with the SeeLens MF apodized diffractive multifocal IOL (Hanita lenses, Israel), defocus curves from +3.5 to -5 D, refraction, uncorrected and corrected distance, intermediate and near vision were measured and analyzed. These outcomes were compared to results reported in the literature of trifocal IOLs.

Results:

Uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA) was -0.04 + 0.09 logMAR, corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA) was -0.12 + 0.05, mean spherical equivalent refraction (SE) was +0.02D + 0.44. Maximal reading acuity was achieved at a defocus of -2.5 (40cm) with a logMAR of -0.04 + 0.08. At a defocus of -1.5 D (67cm) the mean visual acuity was 0.16 + 0.15 logMAR, and at -2.0D (50 cm) the mean visual acuity was 0.01 + 0.11 log MAR. These results are better than those reported in the literature for trifocal IOLs, were the maximal distance, near and intermediate are less.

Conclusions:

The apodized diffractive multifocal IOL with an optimized diffractive function and apodization allows for excellent uncorrected visual acuity, also in the intermediate range. This possibly precludes the need for a trifocal implant, in which trifocality is achieved by adding a set of diffractive rings for the secondary harmonyin order to enhance the intermediate focus.
