Abstract Details

Purpose:

To assess and compare the effect of two multifocal simultaneous-vision contact lenses on visual performance in early presbyopic subjects.

Setting:

University of Valencia, Spain

Methods:

In a cross-over-design study, the visual performance of 20 presbyopic patients (age range: 42 to 47 years) wearing either Air Optix Aqua Multifocal contact lenses or the Biofinity Multifocal contact lenses was assessed. In each patient, binocular distance visual acuity (BDVA), binocular near visual acuity (BNVA), binocular distance contrast sensitivity (BDCS), binocular near contrast sensitivity (BNCS), and the defocus curve were measured under photopic conditions (85 cd/m2) 1 month after contact lens fitting. Moreover, BDVA and BDCS were also assessed under mesopic conditions (5 cd/m2).

Results:

Average Air Optix Aqua Multifocal and Biofinity Multifocal contact lenses BDVA was -0.01±0.07 and 0.00±0.09 logMar under photopic conditions, and 0.13±0.08 and 0.15±0.04 logMar for BDVA under mesopic conditions, respectively. No statistically significant differences were found between the two types of contact lenses for distance vision for either lighting level (p>0.05), but there were, however, significant differences at intermediate distances and for near vision (p<0.05). BDCS testing revealed no statistically significant differences between the Air Optix Aqua Multifocal and the Biofinity Multifocal contact lenses at any spatial frequency for either luminance level (p>0.05). Nonetheless, near vision testing did yield statistically significant differences for 6, 12 and 18 cpd (p<0.05). Finally, the near range of clear vision was significantly broader with the Air Optix Aqua Multifocal contact lens (1.76±0.64 D) than with the Biofinity Multifocal contact lenses (1.54±0.52 D) (p=0.03).

Conclusions:

Both multifocal contact lenses under study provided good and comparable distance visual quality in early presbyopes. However, for intermediate and near vision the Air Optix Aqua Multifocal contact lenses outperformed the Biofinity Multifocal ones. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
