Abstract Details
Purpose:
To evaluate the reading ability and functional near performance of the new TECNIS® Symfony Extended Range of Vision 1-Piece Intraocular Lens (IOL), Model ZXR00 (AMO)
Setting:
Multicenter Clinical Trial
Methods:
In two prospective, multicenter studies, the TECNIS® Symfony IOL, Model ZXR00, is implanted bilaterally in cataract patients (n=31 ZXR00 and n=10 ZCB00 control in NZ; n=150 ZXR00 in EU) after signing informed consent. Follow-up visits are 1 week after surgery for each eye and 1 month and 3 months after surgery for both eyes. Key evaluation criteria at intermediate and near included binocular uncorrected visual acuities, ability to function comfortably without glasses, limitations with activities, and spectacle independence. Additionally, reading ability is tested with the Colenbrander Low Vision Reading Cards in the EU study.
Results:
At 3 months postoperative for the NZ study, visual acuities were significantly better (p<0.05) with the Tecnis® Symfony IOL compared to the ZCB00 at intermediate (-0.031 vs. 0.171 LogMAR) and near (0.195 vs. 0.396 LogMAR) control. The defocus curve for the Tecnis® Symfony IOL demonstrated a statistically (p<0.05) and clinically significant increase in depth of focus, with a 2-line visual acuity improvement over the control through a range of defocus between -1.5 and 3.5 D. At least 87% of subjects reported never wearing glasses for seeing objects at distance, intermediate and near, and at least 78% reported limitations as being 'none' or 'a little bit' for various intermediate/near activities without glasses. Comparison of results will be made with the ongoing EU study.
Conclusions:
The new TECNIS® Symfony Extended Range of Vision IOL, Model ZXR00, provides patients with good uncorrected reading ability at various distances with high levels of spectacle independence and low rates of limitation without glasses.
