Abstract Details
Purpose:
To evaluate the clinical performance of the new TECNIS® Symfony Extended Range of Vision 1-Piece Intraocular Lens (IOL), Model ZXR00 (Abbott Medical Optics Inc.), as compared to a monofocal IOL (TECNIS 1-Piece IOL, Model ZCB00).
Setting:
Auckland Eye, Remuera (Auckland, New Zealand) and Rotorua Eye Clinic (Rotorua, New Zealand).
Methods:
In a prospective, multicenter study, the TECNIS Symfony Extended Range of Vision IOL, Model ZXR00 (AMO), was bilaterally implanted in 31 cataract subjects, and the TECNIS 1-Piece Monofocal IOL, Model ZCB00, was bilaterally implanted in 10 cataract subjects after obtaining informed consent. Follow-up visits took place 1 week after surgery for each eye and 1 month and 3 months after surgery for both eyes. Key evaluation criteria included binocular uncorrected visual acuity for far, distance-corrected visual acuity at intermediate (66 cm) and near (40 cm), defocus testing, and optical/visual symptoms.
Results:
Binocular visual acuities at distance were comparable between the TECNIS Symfony and the monofocal control IOL groups. However, binocular visual acuities were significantly better at intermediate (-0.031 vs. 0.171 LogMAR) and near (0.195 vs. 0.396 LogMAR) with TECNIS Symfony IOL than the control IOL (p<0.05). The binocular defocus curve for the TECNIS Symfony IOL demonstrated a statistically and clinically significant increase (p<0.05) in depth of focus compared to control, as evidenced by sustaining 2 lines of visual acuity improvement through a range of defocus up to 2.5 D. No difference was detected in the reported incidence or degree of difficulty of halos and glare between the TECNIS Symfony and control lenses (p>0.05).
Conclusions:
The results of this clinical study demonstrate that the TECNIS Symfony Model ZXR00 IOL provides distance vision that is comparable to that of a monofocal IOL and significantly improved intermediate and near vision, without significant reports of halos and glare.
