Non-toric copolymer phakic IOL implantation: temporal incision versus steep meridian incision

Purpose:

To study the induced refractive changes caused by different 3.0 mm corneal incision locations for non-toric copolymer phakic IOL implantation

Setting:

A comparative interventional case series was used for the study design.

Methods:

Twenty eyes were randomly assigned to temporal or steep meridian incision for non-toric copolymer phakic IOL implantation. The outcome measures were surgically induced astigmatism (SIA) and uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA) in the two groups at 6 months after surgery.

Results:

Mean SIA was 0.70 ± 0.26 D in temporal incision group and 0.70 ± 0.20 D in the steep meridian incision group. No statistically significant difference was found in the mean SIA (p=0.5). However, UCVA was significantly higher in the steep meridian incision group (p<0.05).

Conclusions:

Steep meridian 3.0 mm corneal incision may be useful during non-toric copolymer phakic IOL implantation to decrease the remaining refractive astigmatism and improve the uncorrected visual acuity. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
