Posterior chamber toric phakic intraocular lens implantation for the correction of anisometropia with astigmatism and treatment of amblyopia

Abstract Details



Purpose:

To report the outcomes of toric phakic intraocular lens (pIOL) implantation in children for the treatment of amblyopia due to anisometropia with astigmatismwho have failed conventional therapy with contact lenses and /OR spectecle .

Setting:

Tadawi Surgical Center

Methods:

Seven children aged 5,7,9 ,9,14.8`and 5(mean, 9.1 years)(eight eyes) with high anisometropic myopic astigmatism (- 6 Dto - 23 D) and amblyopia who have failed conventional therapy with contact lenses and/or spectecle underwent ICL implantation in one eye and amblyopia manged after that by eye patch for 6 hours per day, with follow up ( 12 mo to 40 mo)(mean fu 27mo).

Results:

All children achieved improovent in amblyopia, excellent visual acuity and no secondary severe reaction. No glaucoma. Non of them developed cataract. No patient lost any line of VA . No rotation from desired position .

Conclusions:

Implanting toric ICL in children with high anisometropic myopic astigmatism and amblyopia who have failed conventional therapy with contact lenses and/or spectecle showed an excellent early results, but need more follow up time and higher number of patients. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
