Abstract Details

Purpose:

To study the prevalence of visual impairment due to refractive errors and cataract in the areas of West Bengal - Sight for Kids Project, a LCIF initiative

Setting:

West Bengal

Methods:

Data was obtained from the Sight for Kids project from 2005 until Jan 2014.

Results:

Under this project, a total of 1,061,418 students were screened. The prevalence of cataract was found to be 5.162 per 10,000 and that of refractive error was 387 per 10,000. Refractive error was found to be the biggest cause of childhood blindness ~ 45%.

Conclusions:

Nearly half of the visual impairment detected is potentially avoidable. Screening by school teachers can be an effective way to bridge the gap and ensure timely management to reduce the burden of childhood visual impairment. FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
