Abstract Details

Purpose:

To evaluate the changes in the second-order aberrations and Tilt corresponding to Corneal, Internal /Inner and Total Astigmatism of the ocular system in different age groups and relate them to astigmatic refractive changes

Setting:

Instituto de Oftalmologia Avanzada, Madrid, Spain

Methods:

This descriptive transversal study included three groups of 20 eyes each group and age-related. Everyone was previously selected to comply: be aged between 5 and 65 years, present visual acuity (VA ) corrected or uncorrected greater than or equal to 0.9 and not have undergone any ocular surgery, show no pathology nor ocular disturbance, present only astigmatism 'with the rule' or 'against the rule', not being allowed oblique or irregular astigmatism, and in the case of wearing contact lenses they had to rest from them for the time considered before data collection. The selected patients were divided into three groups, depending on their age, which were analyzed VA with and without refraction monocular manner, corneal topography, and inner and total corneal Aberrometry of low-order (Tilt S1 and Astigmatism S2 3rd and 5th). All of these measures except visual acuity, were performed with the Corneal Topographer and Aberrometer OPD -Scan III by Nidek

Results:

The results showed a statistically significant influence on the Total Coma above Total Astigmatism. The Total Astigmatism scored differences between Internal Astigmatism in power and axis, only in the second age group. Although no statistically significant results were obtained. If it could be seen in graph, the Corneal Astigmatism decreased with age, while Total and Internal increased, keeping the cylinder axis in both cases, the Corneal and Internal 'against the rule' with age

Conclusions:

The amount of anterior corneal astigmatism or influence of this on the total astigmatism decreases with age. Likewise, the total astigmatism is higher in older ages. To get more accurate conclusions and compare them with other published literature, the sample analyzed should expand and add a fourth older group in order to analyze the physiological change in the magnitude and orientation of the different types of astigmatism FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
