Abstract Details

Purpose:

To present a device for easily applying simultaneously heat and massage to meibomian glands

Setting:

Hospital Clinico Universitario de Santiago de Compostela (CHUS) and Hospital Clinico Universitario de A Coruña (CHUAC), Spain

Methods:

The meibomian glands disfunction (MGD) is a very common condition but little attention was paid to it until recently . Currently, one of the pillars of treatment is the application of heat and massage to eyelid for squeezing fat excess retained in the glands. Current systems for application of heat / glandular massage are: homemade ( and cumbersome ) or technological and expensive Therefore, patients with mild / moderate MGD not willing or being able to access to technically advanced systems or meibomian glands probing , have the only option of manual techniques that are cumbersome. This is the reason of a high dropout rate We start from an idea with several years of history, expounded by Prof Murube del Castillo: the use of glass bottles full of water that are easily heated by a microwave oven and provide eyelid massage with the own bottles ( video attached ) Since the rigid shape of the bottles difficult massaging nasal and temporal ends of the eyelids we thought in a product with the proper shape, allowing the heating in a domestic microwave oven and with sufficient consistency to do the massage function plus heat application. The product was brought to 20 users to evaluate its ergonomics and ease of use .

Results:

70 % of users foun it very easy, 20% easy, 10 % didn´t answered. So, top marks for ease of use were reached

Conclusions:

Consideration could be made to the manufacturing of this product as it provides ease of use and can be economical for patients FINANCIAL INTEREST: NONE
